The Post and Telecommunications Regulatory Authority of Zimbabwe (POTRAZ) is advocating for the mandatory registration of mobile handsets by SIM card holders as a measure to enhance the security of electronic transactions and address cyber-crime concerns. Engineer Hasha Myambo, the competition and standards manager at POTRAZ, emphasized the importance of integrating handset registration with the existing SIM card database to bolster transaction security and rebuild trust in Zimbabwe’s ICT sector.
Myambo highlighted that this initiative represents a shift from a traditional command-and-control regulatory framework to a collaborative approach aimed at fostering a competitive digital economy. POTRAZ is actively engaging ICT stakeholders, including other regulators, to develop cohesive national strategies that leverage ICT for economic growth and social development
