Zimbabwe Republic Police Commissioner-General Stephen Mutamba has vowed to take decisive action against senior officers accused of assigning targets to juniors manning roadblocks across the country. The alleged targets, reportedly set at US$300 per day for traffic officers, have led to motorists being detained for extended periods at police stations for minor offenses. This move is part of Mutamba’s efforts to restore public trust and professionalism within the police force.

Mutamba’s directive comes amid growing concerns over corruption within the police service, including viral videos of officers taking bribes to allow unfit vehicles to operate. The police spokesperson, Commissioner Paul Nyathi, has urged passengers to avoid boarding unregistered or dilapidated kombis, emphasizing that no unregistered vehicles will be permitted to operate as public service vehicles.
As the new Commissioner-General, Mutamba has pledged to transform the police service into a modern and corruption-free institution, leveraging technology to fulfill its constitutional mandate. His appointment follows the retirement of Godwin Matanga. With a focus on enhancing professionalism and public confidence, Mutamba’s leadership is expected to spearhead reforms within the police force.
