Chirundu Residents Besieged by Destructive Elephants, Demand Action

Residents of Chirundu are living in fear as elephants repeatedly invade their communities, destroying homes and vehicles. Despite numerous reports to the Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority, residents say no meaningful action has been taken to address the escalating human-wildlife conflict. They express disbelief that land allocated to them for housing has become a site of constant threat, with authorities allegedly offering impractical advice, such as calling during an active elephant incursion, as the only means of intervention.

The community’s frustration is palpable, with many feeling abandoned by the very authorities who permitted their settlement in the area. Residents claim to have identified the problem elephants, making the need for immediate intervention even more apparent. A growing concern is that authorities may be waiting for a tragic incident before taking the situation seriously. This inaction has led to a deep sense of anger and a perception that the lives and well-being of Chirundu residents are being disregarded in favor of wildlife preservation.

Having repeatedly submitted reports with no tangible results, the people of Chirundu are now appealing for national attention, hoping that increased awareness will compel the relevant authorities to finally take decisive action and ensure their safety. They question whether the value of wildlife has superseded their fundamental right to security and peaceful habitation in their own homes.
