#MCM : Collen Masimirembwa – Biomedical Pharmacologist

Collen Masimirembwa, born in 1967 in Zimbabwe, exemplifies African scientific excellence as a biomedical pharmacologist advancing drug discovery tailored to the continent’s genetic diversity. Earning his BSc (Hons) and DPhil in biochemistry from the University of Zimbabwe by 1993, he pursued groundbreaking pharmacogenetics research at Sweden’s Karolinska Institute, completing his PhD in Medical Biochemistry and Biophysics in 1995 on drug metabolism and toxicity mechanisms.

Returning home, Masimirembwa led the University of Zimbabwe’s Biochemistry Department as senior lecturer and head from 1992-1997 before joining AstraZeneca R&D in Sweden as principal scientist, spearheading projects in cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, and infectious diseases while founding the AstraZeneca Africa Pharmacogenetics Research Network to address overlooked African drug responses. In 2008, he established the African Institute of Biomedical Science and Technology (AiBST) in Harare as president and chief scientific officer, driving non-profit research in pharmacogenomics, clinical pharmacology, and biotech collaborations across academia, industry, and government; he also chairs the African Pharmacogenomics Consortium (APC).Now a Distinguished Professor of Clinical Pharmacology at the University of the Witwatersrand’s Sydney Brenner Institute since 2019, Masimirembwa has authored over 100 peer-reviewed papers, mentored countless postgraduates, and earned accolades like the 2018 HUGO Africa Award, Fellowships from the African Academy of Sciences (2018) and Zimbabwe Academy of Sciences (2017), Grand Challenges Africa Award (2016), and 2021 Calestous Juma Leadership Fellowship from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to build genomic medicine ecosystems.
